Furfural is a member of the family of heterocyclic compounds known as the furans, which are charactrerised by a nucleus consisting of a doubly unsaturated ring of four Carbon atoms and one Oxygen atom. Furfural is an aldehyde with the (-CHO) group located in the 2 position of the furan ring. It is obtained industrially from pentosan containing agricultural residues such as corn cobs, bagasse, cottonseed hulls, oat hulls and rice hulls.

Physical Description

Furfural is a clear yellowish to brown liquid with a typical almond smell and shows characteristic properties of aldehyde and furan rings. It mixes readily with alcohol and ether. When exposed to air, a decolourisation takes place increasing acidity and polymer formation. In the absence of oxygen Furfural possesses a high thermal stability.

Chemistry

Furfuryl Alcohol is a member of the family of heterocyclic compounds known as furans, which are charactrerised by a nucleus consisting of an unsaturated ring of four Carbon atoms and one Oxygen atom. Furfuryl Alcohol, which is a primary alcohol, has a hydroxymethyl group (-CH2OH) attached to the 2- position of the furan ring. The Chemical properties of Furfuryl Alcohol are a combination of those due to furan nucleus and to the hydroxymethyl primary alcohol group.

Physical Description

Furfuryl Alcohol is a colorless to pale yellow liquid, soluble in water as well as many common organic solvents. Furfuryl Alcohol is a primary alcohol. Therefore oxidation, esterification and etherification are its typical reactions. Besides the furan ring makes other reactions Furfuryl Alcohol is very sensitive towards acidic reagents and resinifies easily in the presence of acid. Resinification with strong acids may be violently exothermic and should be avoided.

PrincipleUses

The major use of Furfuryl Alcohol is in the production of resins for bonding foundry sands for production of cores and moulds. The binder system contains Furfuryl Alcohol in monomer or polymer form.

Other uses are

  • Used for corrosion-resistant, resinous mortars for joining corrosion- resistant tiles or bricks in fabrication of reactors, storage tanks, fume stacks and floors.
  • Resins and catalyst systems made out of Furfuryl Alcohol are used for making fiberglass reinforced (FRP) tanks, scrubbers, stacks, hoods, ducts, pipes and similar items
  • Furfuryl Alcohol resins are used to bond carbon or graphite aggregates into shaped parts.
  • Used in Phenolic and Urea-Formaldehyde resin systems as a modifier.
  • Furfuryl Alcohol is an effective viscosity reducer for epoxy resins.
  • Furfuryl Alcohol is also used as a chemical building block for pharmaceutical drug synthesis, especially Ranitidine which goes into formulation of anti-ulcer drug.
  • Furfurylation of wood to enhance the hardness and durability of soft renewable wood.
